"I was born
with an ability, With music in me, that is all. The only
credit we can claim is to make use of the talent we are
given by God. That is why I urge young musicians not to be
vain because you have talent. It is what you do with your
talent that matters. Don't demean or waste it. Work - work
constantly to nourish it." ......... Pablo Casals - cellist
At All Saints' Church a dedicated trio of locally-based
professional musicians decided seven years ago to help and
encourage local youngsters to do just what Casals had urged.
"What a great addition to the musical life of the area - a
fact evidenced by the capacity audience." Lynn News
Born from their passion for making music, a love of English
music in particular, and a genuine desire to help and
support talented youngsters in a rural county where
opportunities are not always easily gained, Anglia
Concertante was formed.
"A recent Lynn concert was special for three reasons. It was
held at the oldest parish church in the town, it included an
extremely young musician (13 years old) and it was free. I
have to add a fourth reason - the calibre and standard of
musicianship was absolutely stunning." Lynn News
The founders, cellist Glenis Malkin, oboe player Claire
Clarke and conductor Fraser Goulding spoke with other
like-minded instrumentalists who all agreed to bring their
talents to King's Lynn for expenses, believing very much in
the idea's behind the founding of the unique ensemble.
Talented local youngsters were then invited to sit alongside
experienced professionals in rehearsals and performances of
orchestral music which ranged from The Four Seasons to the
Mozart Requiem; Schuberts symphones to Walton's Facade,
string music including Elgar, Bach and Barber, wind music
ranging from Arnold to Gounod and concertos for everything
from harpsichord to double flutes, double cellos and violins
to French horns, trumpets and oboes.
"From the opening bars of Elgar's Serenade for Strings it
was difficult to believe that this was not a professional
full-time orchestra such was the quality of the playing - a
string tone that can only be described as superb." Lynn News
Working alongside seasoned professionals with backgrounds in
major British orchestras including the BBC, Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
and London Philharmonic Orchestra and under the baton of a
conductor who was the former musical director of the D'Oyle
Carte Opera Company and now regularly working with the BBC
Concert Orchestra, the London Concert Orchestra, the Ulster
Orchestra and the Manchester Concert Orchestra could not be
a better training ground and experience.
"A candlelit church, the music of Corelli and the fine
string players of Anglia Concertante were all that was
needed to fill a capacity audience with warmth and goodwill
on the Sunday before Christmas." Lynn News
Of course, none of this would be possible without Father
Paul Kinsey who immediately embraced the vision and
opportunity, bringing and supporting first-class music
making in the wonderful church with its outstanding acoustic
which is now the official and much-loved home of Anglia
Concertante.
"Gounod's Petite Symphony for Wind was a delight, notably
the contribution from young local flautist Alex Jakeman with
her effortless playing of the melody in the second
movement."
Our concert programme for 2008 will
include Schubert and Beethoven String Trios, Oboe Quartets
by Moeran and Gordon Jacob and Schubert's great Unfinished
Symphony at our King's Lynn Festival-time concert.
