Although this really is in poor taste, I think the
failure of these products may result from the fact
that Topshop had failed to understand the market -
they should have retailed it at a world pilgrimage
site, like Rome or Lourdes.
When you think of some of the 'rubbish' that is
sold, sometimes officially at pilgrimage sites,
these products are not much worse. Blue Q are
somewhat challenging, even controversial, in their
approach to marketing almost anything, as the
website clearly shows! I particularly like the book
entitled '50 sad chairs' - about 50 sad chairs!

The
Commercialisation of Christ |
Saturday 5th
January 2008 |
|
It
has always been a joke, since I was in school, that
you could always tell when it was Christmas because
Woolworths had Cadbury Crème Eggs on sale. Well, on
a similar theme, I was a little 'taken aback' when
visiting Walsingham just after Christmas.
In the window of the Shrine Shop they have a statue
of the Resurrected Christ - presumably from an
Easter set - whilst in the other windows they still
had Nativity sets.
It would seem that commercialisation has even
compromised the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.
Trying to get some people to accept the Incarnation
is 'like flogging a dead horse' without trying to
'flog them' the Resurrection at the same time! |
